What do Joan Baez, My Morning Jacket, and Miley Cyrus have in common? Not much that’s for sure, but what they do share is their love of Bob Dylan, one of the greatest folk heroes ever produced. Bob Dylan’s new tribute album celebrates the poet laureate’s music by bringing together 80 artists that span the spectrum from Bob Dylan’s musical muse to the 19-year-old Disney channel celebrity.
“The Chimes of Freedom” marks a historic milestone for both Bob Dylan and a charity that he works very closely with, Amnesty International. It’s no surprise that no fewer than 80 artists wanted to take part in this 50th anniversary for the group whose mission statement reads, “to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated.”
That is certainly the message that Bob Dylan has preached throughout his 50 years of recording. Sinead O’Connor participated with a moving version of “Property of Jesus,” the rock & roll Queens of the Stone Age bring their raw bluesy appropriately to “Outlaw Blues,” My Morning Jacket puts their spin on “You’re a Big Girl Now,” and Joan Baez brings it home with “Seven Curses.”
Among the not-so-great performances are of course Miley Cyrus’ “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” which was already released on YouTube, Ke$sha’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” and coming in third worst were Maroon 5 for their needless version of “I Shall Be Released.”
