When the insanely popular show The X-Files returned to FOX last year, sci-fi fans let out a collective rebel yell. A series that began in the early 90’s eventually became the longest running sci-fi show in television history, cementing it as a cult classic and introducing us all to Mulder and Scully. The truth was out there, and we needed to find it.
We only got six episodes of our favorite FBI agents in 2016, but the buzz surrounding the show’s brief television return was enough to get fans excited again about the possibility of picking up the story where we left off. Now we’re learning that avid watchers will be getting their wish.
At the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday, Fox president David Madden told reporters that while the schedules of stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson make the negotiations “complex”, the network expects “to have an announcement shortly.”
The new run will be more than the six episodes we were teased with last year, but it still wouldn’t be a full 22-episode order just yet. Most likely, the show will be returning in 2018, giving us time to get excited again about the possibilities.
