Nick Cannon Quits America’s Got Talent

If you’re looking for a new job, you may want to contact the folks at America’s Got Talent. Nick Cannon has announced that he is leaving the show amid controversy over jokes in his latest stand-up special.

Last week, TMZ reported that Cannon was nearly fired from NBC for a segment of his stand-up where he told the crowd that executives at the network wanted him to tone down “his swagger” on the variety show competition. The remarks were seen as disparaging, as Cannon signed a contract with a clause that bars him from speaking about the network without their approval. The company apparently had worked things out and were hoping to keep their relationship with Cannon intact, but that is no longer the case.

“I find myself in a dark place having to make a decision that I wish I didn’t have to, but as a man, an artist, and a voice for my community I will not be silenced, controlled or treated like a piece of property. There is no amount of money worth my dignity or my integrity,” Cannon says via Facebook.

He continues, “I have loved hosting AMERICAS GOT TALENT for the last 8 seasons, watching talented, brave, and courageous Americans accomplish their dreams in front of millions has been nothing but a joy, and everyone has been a pleasure to work with but my soul won’t allow me to be in business with corporations that attempt to frown on freedom of speech, censor artists, and question cultural choices.”

The former husband of Mariah Carey continues on to say this isn’t the first time he’s had conflict behind the scenes at the network and that he “will not stand for it.”
