HBO Acquires The Rights To David Bowie Documentary

By: Renee Grant

The rights to a documentary chronicling the late David Bowie‘s recording sessions for his final two albums, 2013’s The Next Day and 2016’s Blackstar, as well as his time working on the stage production Lazarus have been acquired by HBO. The film was directed and produced by Francis Whately.

David Bowie: The Last Five Years premiered on BBC2 in January, features rare archival Bowie photos, video recordings from the two albums’ studio sessions, and interviews with those who have worked with Bowie through the years.

“Looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to reexamine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change,” Whately says in a statement from HBO.

An air date for the documentary has yet to be announced from HBO.
