As cities all over the country gear up to have their own Mardi Gras celebrations, New York had the pleasure of hosting Ivan Neville, New Orleans pianist and son of Aaron Neville. Booked for two shows on Tuesday, February 21st and Wednesday, February 22nd, Neville brought his set to the legendary Blue Note jazz club. The real surprise came when his manager, Jon Phillips, got a call from Jane Rose, manager for Keith Richards.
“Jane Rose called and said Keith Richards was coming,” Phillips tells Billboard. Neville, who is also a member of Richards’ X-Pensive Winos project, told Phillips to ensure the show happened, and he absolutely did.
Richards made an appearance during the second set of the show, with producer Don Was and singer Lisa Fischer in tow. The rocker didn’t join the set, which included versions of the Rolling Stones’ Wild Horses, the Meters’ People Say, Lee Dorsey’s Yes We Can, and Professor Longhair’s Big Chief.
After the show, Richards joined Neville backstage for “a jubilant hang,” as described by Phillips.
