One of the 90’s biggest hit television shows is being revived, but not for TV… for musical theater. Friends, the show that introduced us to songs about foul-smelling felines and the ubiquitous pick-up line of the era, (“how YOU doin’?”) is headed for New York in the form of an off-broadway show.
Following on the heels of an unofficial rendition of the piece in Chicago last year, both last year’s production and this year’s off-Broadway show are not related to the original series but is the inspiration for the new production.
Friends! The Musical is written by Bob and Tobly McSmith who have previously done send-up versions of Saved By the Bell, Showgirls and the Kardashians on the stage. The Friends piece will feature songs titled The One Where We Make A Million Dollars An Episode, The Only Coffee Shop in New York, Oh. My God. It’s Janice!, and We Were On A Break.
The musical will be produced at Triad Theatre, with tickets going on sale in June for the fall run of the show.
The musical comes as former core cast member Lisa Kudrow confirms a recent secret reunion of her co-stars, but she says it was just for a dinner so the musical may be the only Friends news we have to look forward to for a while.
