Kiefer Sutherland: ‘Writing Songs Helped Ease My Heartbreak’

By: Renee Grant

Actor Kiefer Sutherland may have won our hearts as the almighty Jack Bauer in the wildly popular TV series 24, but he’s now set his sights on being the music industry’s newest heartthrob.

Sutherland, 50, released a country music album last year titled Down in a Hole. Most of the record was written by Sutherland, and in a new interview, he reveals that the song Calling Out Your Name was about the first time he ever experienced heartbreak.

“Over time, you realize how young you were and how young the other person was and I guess I was just trying to put it to rest,” Sutherland says. “It ended up coming out in that song. And I realized, looking back, that there were so many factors… but going to write that song actually forced me to look at it in a different way. It helped me put that experience to bed if you will.”

Originally, Kiefer wrote songs as a form of personal therapy, not intending for the public to hear them. However, after playing his music for several people, he was encouraged to record them.

Speaking about the personal nature of the album, he says, “When I sat down to write the songs, I think there was a lot of stuff kind of in my 40’s that I was trying to come to terms with and stuff that I kind of maybe not dealt with from my early 20’s.

“And I think all of the songs were kind of poignant moments in my life where I had to figure out something in order to move forward. And writing these songs was very helpful for me to do that.”
