Aretha Franklin Is Recording With Stevie Wonder & Lionel Richie

The Queen of Soul is enjoying an amazing past few weeks; first, we learned she’s bringing an amazing concert to Philly, and now she’s been honored in her hometown of Detroit with a street named for her.

Aretha Franklin enjoyed a three-day music festival in Detroit, complete with a tribute concert and her own free headlining show in downtown Detroit. Franklin has said she will soon retire from music so this may have been her final performance in Detroit.

“After 54 years of traveling and flying and all of that can be very tiring, and even the tour bus takes a lot out of you,” Franklin recently told Billboard. “I’m not happy; I’ll put it like that. I’m not happy, exactly, about not doing something that you’ve been doing for 54 years that you really, really love. But there’s a warranty on everything. Nothing lasts forever.”

She also told Billboard she’s planning to continue recording, even if she doesn’t tour. She hopes to bring us an album in January featuring songs with Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Lionel Richie, and Yitzhak Perlman.

“Lionel’s working on his piece, Stevie’s working on his piece; they’re both originals,” Franklin says. “I’m working on a couple of things. I think there will be about 10 [songs] on it, maybe 11, but I’m thinking 10.”
