The 80’s are back in a big way and that includes our favorite 80’s TV shows, movies, clothes, games… it’s all making a comeback. Now we find a classic movie is making a return… Gremlins!
Remember the adorable brown and white, doe-eyed Gizmo that you couldn’t get wet and NEVER feed after midnight? He’s back with his spawns, the green, lizard-like Gremlin goblins.
Original screenwriter of the classic, Chris Columbus, tells Slashfilm, “I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”
Columbus even hints at Gizmo’s fate when asked if the Mogwai should be done away with to prevent more Gremlins from spawning, saying, “Very good observation. That comes up in the movie, certainly… I think it probably is a good idea, to be honest with you. Too many people are dying.”
He says the new film will use minimal CGI, mostly to remove puppetry wires from the footage, but that the characters will all be puppets, a rarity in films these days and a throwback to many of the 80’s biggest fantasy film successes.
